After 20 years and over 40,000 miles of cruising in trawlers (11+ years in our DeFever 41, Sanderling), we are reluctantly withdrawing from trawlering. Our “home on the water,” Sanderling, is for sale. A DeFever 41, such as Sanderling, is the perfect boat for economical coastal, intra-coastal, and inland river cruising, and makes a great live-aboard for two people (with room for guests). Sanderling has cruised the east coast of the United States multiple times, the Bay of Fundy, multiple cruises in the Erie Canal, several trips into the Canadian canals, and through the Great Loop. She has served us well in winds approaching hurricane force while anchored in Lake Champlain, and six to eight foot standing waves exiting the Cape Cod Canal into Buzzards Bay.

Here are two files with a description of all of Sanderling’s equipment as well as photos taken recently. The draft with the bimini and its frame down is 12.0 feet.

    • Bob,
I am looking for a comfortable “Looper”. I have just discovered your blog and will be reading it as part of my research. Sanderling appears to be a good choice for my purposes. Please contact me.

      • Hi, Archie. Sanderling certainly knows the way (the Great Loop) and we found her to be very comfortable for cruising/living aboard. I’ll get back to you directly at your email address. Thanks for contacting me.

  1. I would like to have any more information about the boat. I’m ready to start cruising. And serious about a trawler. Thank you

  2. Hi, also looking at your DF 41. I have a bridge to navigate and your clearance, with mast and Bimini down, is 10 feet above the water? Seems low. Have you done anything else to reduce the bridge clearance. Is your boat still available? Greg mcquown. 727-253-7827. New port richey

    • Boat is still available. The clearances are correct – measured them with the boat fully loaded in salt water – but you have to realize that it isn’t exact, probably +/- 4 inches!
